Post DH, obviously. So, here's what we know: 1. We're not told if Snape's body had been found. 2. His portrait isn't in the Headmaster's office. The very office which had accepted Snape as a Headmaster, and refused to accept Umbridge. 2. We're not told what became of Fawkes. 3. Fawkes' tears have proved effective against the Basilisk's poison. (I doubt that Nagini could outpoison THAT). 4. Fawkes had rushed to Harry's aid in COS, because Harry had manifested "a true loyalty to Dumbledore", and that was enough to summon him. 5. Snape had manifested a true loyalty to Dumbledore. Repeatedly. 6. Harry&Co left Snape after he stopped moving and closed his eyes. 7. When you bleed to death, you lose consciousness before you die.
And in my mind - that may be the come-off in the films! - I tell this around since ages.
"And he moved no more", - that was a meaningless statement for Rowling explaining somebodys death.
Very interesing that in the movie his sentense in the potion-class was changed into: "can put a stopper in death" instead of the mere "can stopp death" like in the book...
And there are many other hints... Believe me - he will survive - at least on the screen!

Yaih. D'you know what ???? Reading DH, I repeatedly thought that JKR wrote many things directly for the fans and fanfic writers. For example, she gave us all the names of the next generation. I thought the same about Snape - exactly : she gave us a posssibility to believe that he could have survived.
However, I keep thinking that he didn't want to survive by himself and was relieved in death, once his mission achieved and the Dark Lord defeated. Some characters live for the future and for the happiness in their time existence. Not Snape.
I believe that JKR wasn't exactly sure herself about what to do with Snape, so she decided to postpone the definite answer about his fate until she makes up her mind. He wouldn't be the first character in her books that was proclaimed dead only to be found very much alive years later. If I remember correctly, in one of her interviews she said that "Snape is fun to write"; if I was a writer, I would be rather reluctant about letting go of one of the characters that I enjoy writing the most. So she gave both herself and us some space for alternate ending to Snape's story without coming to disregard with the original canon storyline.
And she also said that she was thinking about writing a book that wasn't based on Harry's character...now, I KNOW I'm overly optimistic...but still...I sure hope that her inspiration goes Snapeway...
...yes, I agree that Snape probably wasn't too keen on finding a happiness for himself , after his mission was completed. But I still can't see a person with such strong will, sharp intellect and a rather spicy temperament (though carefully kept under control for most of times) simply letting go. Snape strikes me as a type of person who would fight, if only for the fighting's sake, if only out of sheer spite. It's just not in his nature to give up, no matter how miserable he is. And with so much knowledge, wits and power, he would be able to do so much, for so many, in many more battles to come. It's simply such a waste of everything, dying like that...*sigh*
Hmm...I somehow don't think JKR would be happy with that. But she might allow a hint that he MIGHT HAVE survived...like, for example, stressing that his body wasn't found, or something like that. That would be nice...imagine so many good fanfics and fanarts arising, founded on one little, tiny, itty-bitty hint...
We´ve not the foggiest idea what for secret fixings had been made between JKR and Warner Bros...
IF JKR wouldn´t be much amused by the idea of a Severus who survived, so why was that sentense changed? That done makes no other sense at all..., for example.
Warner Bros had always to take great care for to not tell too much of anything what would had properbly given any hints of the further developments in the books to come (just remember the deleted scene from the potion-class, to cut out that glare from Severus to Harry was a horrible done!!). So maybe Warner Bros forced as an sort of a regive from JKR, the "allowance" of a Severus Snape who survive...?
I am not that sure if she is really upset by such an ending...
But - don´t paint the daisys - Lets wait and see.
I for one believe, he´ll survive on the screen. - The "Hows" And "Ifs" ain´t grieving me, yet.

Changing the end in the movie would open the door for a possible sequel book, one that would feature Sev's survival, one that would make my decade better...
Though, I still can't hep but thinking that WE would like him to survive - while HE (ahem. the character ) didn't. It's not that he is the suicidal or giving up type. That's just that he always lived for his mission and stand, so strongly, against all the difficulties, because of this mission. Once he has to live without any more goal, just for the principle of simply breathing - that's not enough for him, for the intense and passionate character he is. Of course, we could have promised him recognition, Orders of Merlin, endless headmastership or great carrier as Potions Master etc. But during his life, and especially his last year, he certainly found that recognition was no more important to him. And happiness, love, family, friendships, etc ? Well...If he could learn about all that, then it would be a completely different experience, a second life, and a completely different character.
Fortunately, fanfictions are there for that, but JKR herself would have been in canon (in my opinion) too ordinary and uninspired, giving him this second life. It would have been so expected - the good guy having the expected good ending. Like that, he's a tragical hero - and it suits him more, I think. Severus Snape is all drama and extremes...Could have he been different in the end ? For my part, I'm OK with him dying like he lived - in the shadow, under his unfair and tragical fate... I'm cruel, no doubt.
Nah, not cruel, you simply got the exact point of why he's such a fascinating and touching character. Sev wouldn't be Sev without his tragical fate and all the angst and suffering that goes with it...I myself am ambivalent about how I'd feel if Rowling decided to resurrect him. I'm a bit worried that the character would lose some of his appeal if shown out of the anti-Voldemort/protecting Harry/mistrusted spy/nasty teacher role, which suited him so well. But, I must admit...I'm worse than cruel...I'm plain selfish! I WANT MORE OF HIM! argh.. *ehm*. and so I hope, if he does turn out to be alive, that JKR will know- as masterful as she had proven herself to be- how to work out another scheming, spying, deceiving plot in which Sev would swim like fish in water. No Orders of Merlin, great carriers, nice house in flowers, or any kind of nice, steady life for him! he would have to remain the sarcastic, mistrusted git with lousy social life and dangerous professional occupation...like we all know and love him...
